What is Melatonin?

Melatonin supplements may help patients taking certain medications – such as beta-blocker blood pressure medications – to be able to fall asleep more effectively.  That said, it’s very important to speak with a doctor before combining these supplements with any medications.

Many patients with endometriosis – a painful uterine disorder – may also find that they benefit from taking these supplements.  Research has found that after 8 weeks of daily use, women with this condition require less painkiller use and experience reduced pain while using the toilet, while menstruating, and during intercourse.

Some research shows that melatonin supplementation can improve primary insomnia by reducing the amount of time it takes to fall asleep.  Primary insomnia is a form that is not linked with environmental or medical problems.  That said, it’s important to note that with this condition, the supplements decreased the time it took to fall asleep by an average of only 12 minutes.

Though the most common form of melatonin supplement is a tablet, there are other forms, as well, such as oral strips and other formulations. There are no known activity, food, or beverage restrictions for taking melatonin, though any specific directions provided by the doctor should be followed.

Possible serious side effects of melatonin use include drowsiness, headache, or upset stomach. Stop taking the supplements and contact your doctor should any of these side effects occur.     I work shift work (often nights) and I think it has really messed up my sleep patterns and given me terrible insomnia. My girlfriend suggested I try melatonin supplements and so far it is really helping. I have not slept this well since I was a teenager. I would recommend it to anyone who has sleeping pattern issues.

    I have insomnia and I used to be on ambien CR which I loved, but my insurance would not cover it so I had to switch to something more affordable. I tried melatonin supplements but they didn’t work for me at all. I would take it around 10-11 pm and not fall asleep until 3am or so. I also felt groggy and tired all the next day. I just don’t think this is the best product for insomnia.

    I am in my 30’s and find melatonin works great for me. I have been taking it for about 3 years now. I don’t have any weird dreams, just decent sleep. There is also no grogginess the next day of if you have to wake up for some reason. Feels pretty natural.

    Since starting menopause I have been unable to sleep. I am sure I have insomnia so my doctor suggested I try melatonin. I have tried it now a few times and I have not slept this well since I was a child. I don’t wake up groggy either. The only thing is you have to take it at night because the daylight counter acts with it.

    I heard that melatonin really increases your dreaming and that if you are prone to nightmares you should not take it. Is this true?
